Farmers’ Opend Days
The Farmers’ Open Days aim to establish closer connections between producers and consumers, promoting access to seasonal, healthy, and sustainable products, while raising awareness about the social, economic, and environmental importance of a local food system. These events will be organised by the 12 Tourism and Hospitality Schools, either at the schools themselves or in nearby locations.
The Farmers’ Open Days will Feature 3 Key Activities
Demonstration
Local farmers practising sustainable agriculture will showcase and sell their products.
Tastings
Students from the Tourism and Hospitality Schools, alongside their chef instructors, will prepare tasting dishes using local, seasonal products provided by the participating farmers. An overview of the ingredients will be provided, including their origins, properties, and the process behind preparing the dishes.
Open Discussion
All participants will be invited to join an open discussion on topics of interest to producers, such as the scalability and profitability of sustainable farms, the importance of reducing food waste and ensuring food security, the role of short supply chains in revitalising local communities and reducing carbon emissions, and more.
Objectives
— To build trust and strengthen relationships between farmers and consumers, supporting local communities and providing consumers with access to healthy, sustainable products while securing farmers’ livelihoods.
— To reduce greenhouse gas emissions across the food system by fostering short supply chains.
— To create a space for sharing knowledge on the environmental, social, and economic dimensions of sustainability and encourage the adoption of local ecological practices.
— To raise consumer awareness about the advantages of sustainable food production and distribution systems, promoting more conscious consumption.
The GrowLIFE team will create a Guide for Organising Farmers’ Open Days, which will serve as a resource for students at the Tourism and Hospitality Schools and others interested in organising similar events.
